Entry Requirements Physical Demands: Participants must be able to meet the physical demands of providing CPR. This includes performing CPR on the floor, applying both breaths and compressions, and working with a partner in on/off-floor scenarios.

Language & Literacy: Participants must possess functional written and spoken English skills to make accurate verbal reports in-class. This is required to replicate reporting to emergency services and workplace supervisors.

Online Study (If Applicable): Students must have access to a computer, smartphone, tablet, or other electronic devices with a current browser and internet access. Skills must be sufficient to follow a video learning program and complete both online pre-course work and in-class assessments.

Course durations can vary for multiple reasons, so the durations below are the minimum possible amount.

  • Refresher (with online study) face to face contact time of at least 1 Hour 30 Mins

    • There are no prerequisite units, however as this course recognises your prior knowledge and current skills, and no face to face training is provided, it is recommended that you hold a current certificate. To Select this “Refresher” course

  • Online with face-to-face assessment (with pre-course online study + in-class electronic assessment) face to face contact time of at least 3 Hours

    • If you are familiar with using computers and online training and assessment. Select “Online with face to face assessment” course

+ Assessment Activities

Performance tasks and practical scenarios:

  • Perform CPR on an adult (incl. the use of an AED and placing a casualty into the recovery position)

  • Perform CPR on an infant

    • CPR assessment requires candidates to perform at least two (2) minutes of single rescuer uninterrupted CPR on an adult resuscitation manikin placed on the floor and an infant resuscitation manikin placed on a firm surface.  In a scenario, participants will also work in a small team to demonstrate a rotation of operators with minimal interruptions to compression's, while applying an AED during an emergency CPR scenario, on an adult resuscitation manikin placed on the floor.  In a scenario, participants will also manage an unconscious casualty including appropriate positioning to reduce the risk of airway compromise, manually assess vital signs, and provide an accurate verbal report of the incident.

Theory assessment: A written assessment consisting of multiple-choice questions.

1. How long is the CPR certificate valid?

The HLTAID009 Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation certificate has an industry-recommended renewal period of 12 months. Most employers in healthcare, childcare, and fitness require a new certificate every year to remain compliant with Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) guidelines.

2. What are the physical requirements to pass?

To be deemed competent, National RTO standards require that you:

  • Perform CPR on the floor:You must be able to kneel and perform 2 minutes of uninterrupted CPR on an adult manikin.
  • Work in Teams: You will work with a partner for on/off-floor emergency scenarios.
  • Communication You must possess functional English skills to make accurate verbal reports to emergency services and complete incident forms.

3. Can I do this course entirely online?

No. While you can complete your theory and pre-course work online, Australian regulations require you to demonstrate practical CPR skills in person before a qualified assessor. You must have access to a smartphone or tablet to complete your digital in-class assessments.

4. What is the difference between these courses?

  • HLTAID009 Provide CPR: Focuses strictly on CPR, AED use, and basic life support.
  • HLTAID010 Provide Basic Emergency Life Support: Includes CPR plus basic management of shock and injuries.
  • HLTAID011 Provide First Aid: This is the "Standard First Aid" course. It already includes HLTAID009 and HLTAID010. If your boss asked for "First Aid," you likely need HLTAID011.

5. What should I wear to the CPR course?

Please wear modest, comfortable clothing (such as trousers) and closed-toe shoes. You will be bending, kneeling, and working on the floor; appropriate dress ensures your modesty and safety during practical drills.
