Entry Requirements
  • Participants must be able to meet the physical demands of providing CPR, including performing CPR on the floor, applying both breaths and compressions.
  • Also be capable of working with a partner in on/off-floor scenarios.
  • Participants must possess functional written and spoken English skills to make accurate verbal reports in class, replicating the process of reporting to emergency services and workplace supervisors.
  • Online Study (If Applicable): Students must have access to a computer, smartphone, tablet, or other electronic devices with a current browser and internet access.

This course provides practical training for workers within an education and care setting to respond to first aid emergencies in line with legal and workplace requirements, Australian Resuscitation Council guidelines and other Australian national peak clinical bodies. 

It teaches how to identify illness or injury, access emergency services, safely provide first aid treatment using action plans, equipment and resources, for CPR, defibrillation, administering an autoinjector for anaphylaxis, administering asthma medication, immobilisation for envenomation, fractures, dislocations, sprains and strains, for bleeding and shock and other conditions.

You will learn basic anatomy, physiology and the differences between adults, children and infants relating to CPR, managing an infant or child with an acute illness, or who requires an immediate ambulance response and conveying incident details to parents, caregivers and emergency services.

The course covers completing incident documentation and debriefing for improvement of response, recognising psychological impacts, talking with children about their emotions and seeking help as required.

+ Course Durations

Course durations can vary for multiple reasons, so the durations below are the minimum possible amount.

  • Online with face-to-face assessment (with pre-course online study + in-class electronic assessment) face to face contact time of at least 6 Hours

    • If you are familiar with using computers and online training and assessment. Select this “Online with face to face assessment” course

  • Face-to-Face Face to Face contact time of at least 12 Hours (2 days)

    • If you are unfamiliar with using computers and online training and assessment. Select this “face to face” course.

    • The theory + First Aid Incident Report is delivered face to face (multiple choice delivered verbally, with the learner marking answer in writing), during the course. Hence if learners would have difficulty completing a pre-course on-line assessment, or who’s learning style is more kinaesthetic or practical focused, this modality better suits these learners, and is the preferred modality when we deliver training on community.

+ Childcare First Aid Training Course Requirements

Participants must have the physical capacity to perform the practical demonstrations, such as 2 minutes of uninterrupted CPR on the floor and performing rescue breathing techniques on manikins.

Online study:  Students must have access to a computer, smartphone, tablet or other electronic devices with access to the internet to complete the online/ pre-course studies.

Performance tasks and practical scenarios:

  • Perform CPR on an adult (incl. the use of an AED and placing a casualty into the recovery position)

  • Complete a first aid incident report form based on the simulated first aid scenario

  • Perform CPR on a child

  • Perform CPR on an infant

  • Manage a child casualty with anaphylaxis

  • Manage a child casualty with asthma

  • Manage a choking child and infant casualty

  • Manage a child casualty with non-life-threatening bleeding and shock, requiring minor wound cleaning

  • Manage a child casualty with a nosebleed

1. What is HLTAID012 Provide First Aid in an Education and Care Setting?

This training is a nationally recognised qualification for educators and childcare staff. It gives you the skills to handle first aid emergencies for infants and children. It covers basic life support and how to manage common injuries or illnesses found in care environments.

2. Is this course approved for childcare workers?

Yes. HLTAID012 Provide First Aid in an Education and Care Setting meets the standards set by the Australian Children’s Education and Care Quality Authority (ACECQA). It covers the first aid, asthma, and anaphylaxis training needed for carers and educators across Australia.

3. How long does the certificate last?

  • First Aid: Valid for 3 years (36 months)
  • CPR: Although the First Aid cert lasts 3 years, the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) recommends a CPR refresher every 12 months.

4. Can I complete this childcare first aid course entirely online?

No. To get your certificate, you must show your practical skills in person. Redpath offer a "Blended" path. This means you finish your theory online when it suits you, then attend a short session for hands-on practice with our trainers.

5. Can I do the therory at home?

Yes. Our most popular option is Blended Delivery. You complete the theory online in your own time, followed by a 6-hour practical session. This saves you a full day in the classroom. We also offer a 2-day Face-to-Face option (12 hours total) for those who prefer traditional learning.

6. What are the physical requirements for the assessment?

To pass, you must perform at least two minutes of CPR on a manikin on the floor without stopping. If you have an injury that makes kneeling hard, please talk to us before your session so we can help.

7. Does the course include asthma and anaphylaxis management?

Yes. HLTAID012 Provide First Aid in an Education and Care Setting teaches you how to spot and treat severe allergic reactions and breathing issues. You will learn to use adrenaline auto-injectors like EpiPens and asthma puffers safely.

8. Do I need a USI to enrol?

Yes. Every student doing training in Australia needs a Unique Student Identifier (USI). This is a free number that keeps your records in one place. You can get yours on the government website before you start.
