If you want to work on a construction site in Alice Springs or elsewhere in the Northern Territory, you need a White Card before you start. The required course is CPCWHS1001 Prepare to Work Safely in the Construction Industry, also known as general construction induction training.

For workers in Alice Springs, this requirement is especially important because construction work can happen across a wide range of environments, from residential building sites and civil works to remote community projects, infrastructure upgrades, maintenance works and regional contractor sites. Employers need to know that every worker understands basic site safety before entering an active work area.

The most important thing to know before booking is that online White Card training is not recognised in the Northern Territory. If you are based in Alice Springs and searching for an “online White Card” or “White Card Alice Springs online”, be careful. In the NT, White Card training must be completed face-to-face through an approved NT Registered Training Organisation.

There is also a step after training that many people miss. Completing the course gives you training evidence, such as a Statement of Attainment, but you may still need to apply for your NT White Card after the course. This should usually be done within 60 days from when your training evidence is issued. Getting this right from the start helps avoid delays with employment, site access or having to repeat the process.

Redpath Education delivers White Card training in Alice Springs, supporting local workers, apprentices, contractors, community organisations and businesses across Central Australia with practical, compliant face-to-face training.

Can You Do a White Card Course Online in Alice Springs?

No. If you live or work in Alice Springs and need a White Card for construction work in the Northern Territory, you should not book a self-paced online White Card course.

The Northern Territory does not recognise online White Card training. This is because the course includes practical safety components that need to be completed in person.

This matters because White Card rules are different across Australia. Some states and territories may accept certain delivery formats, but the NT requires face-to-face training. Booking the wrong course can mean your training is not accepted, your employer may not allow you on-site, and you may need to pay for another course.

The safer option is to complete your White Card course face-to-face in Alice Springs with a provider that understands NT requirements.

What Is the White Card Course?

The White Card course is the nationally recognised unit:

CPCWHS1001 Prepare to Work Safely in the Construction Industry

It is the required construction induction course for people who need to work on or enter active construction sites.

The course gives students the basic safety knowledge needed to work safely around construction hazards, follow workplace health and safety requirements, use personal protective equipment correctly and respond to incidents or emergencies on-site.

Who Needs a White Card in Alice Springs?

You generally need a White Card before starting construction work or entering an active construction site in Alice Springs or elsewhere in the NT.

This may apply to:

  • Labourers

  • Apprentices

  • Tradespeople

  • Site workers

  • Supervisors

  • Subcontractors

  • Maintenance workers entering construction areas

  • Workers involved in civil, building or infrastructure projects

  • People entering active construction zones as part of their role

If you are starting work with a builder, contractor, civil works team, remote project crew or maintenance provider, your White Card is usually one of the first requirements to organise.

How to Get a White Card in Alice Springs

Step 1: Book the correct NT White Card course

Choose a White Card course that is accepted in the Northern Territory. Do not assume a course designed for another state or territory will meet NT requirements.

Redpath Education delivers White Card training in Alice Springs for people who need construction induction training for NT worksites.

Step 2: Attend face-to-face training

In the NT, White Card training must be completed in person. Self-paced online training is not recognised.

You need to attend the full face-to-face session and take part in the required training and assessment activities.

Step 3: Bring the correct ID

You will need to provide identification as part of the enrolment and training process. This usually includes approved photo ID.

Before your course, check the instructions from Redpath Education so you know what to bring on the day.

Step 4: Complete the assessment

To pass the course, you need to complete the required assessment tasks. These may include written questions, oral questions and practical safety demonstrations.

Step 5: Receive your training evidence

After successful completion, you will receive training evidence for CPCWHS1001 Prepare to Work Safely in the Construction Industry. This is usually a Statement of Attainment or another accepted document.

You will need this evidence for the next step.

Step 6: Apply for your NT White Card

In the Northern Territory, completing the course is not always the final step. You may still need to apply for your NT White Card using your training evidence and ID documents.

You should usually apply within 60 days from the date your training evidence is issued.

This includes being able to:

  • Follow safety instructions

  • Answer written and spoken questions

  • Understand simple measurements

  • Communicate clearly during practical tasks

Clothing and footwear

The course includes practical assessment, so you need to wear practical clothing and suitable footwear.

You must be able to take part in PPE and safety demonstration tasks.

How Long Does the Alice Springs White Card Course Take?

The NT White Card course runs for at least 6 hours face-to-face.

Most students complete the course in one day, although timing can vary depending on the class, assessment process and learner needs.

What Do You Learn in the White Card Course?

The course prepares you for basic safety expectations on construction sites.

You will learn about:

Construction site hazards

You will learn how to identify common hazards on construction sites, including risks linked to vehicles, tools, equipment, materials, people, weather conditions and changing site environments.

WHS duties and responsibilities

The course explains the safety duties workers must follow on-site.

Risk control measures

You will learn how hazards are controlled and what actions reduce the chance of injury or harm.

Personal protective equipment

The training covers PPE requirements and how to use basic protective equipment correctly.

Safe work practices

You will learn practical behaviours that help protect you and others on-site.

Incident and emergency response

The course covers what to do if something goes wrong, including hazard reporting, incident response and emergency procedures.

What Assessments Are Involved?

The White Card course includes theory and practical assessment.

Assessment may include:

Written assessment

You answer multiple-choice and short-answer questions about construction safety.

Oral assessment

You answer spoken questions to show you understand key safety requirements.

Practical assessment

You complete practical safety tasks, including PPE-related activities and instructions that reflect construction site expectations.

What Happens After You Pass?

After successful completion, you receive training evidence for CPCWHS1001 Prepare to Work Safely in the Construction Industry.

You may then need to apply for your NT White Card using your training evidence and ID documents.

Do not leave this too long. You should usually apply within 60 days from the date your training evidence is issued.

Lost, Stolen or Replacement NT White Cards

If your NT White Card has been lost, stolen or destroyed, you can apply for a replacement.

You generally do not need to redo the training just because your card is lost, but you may need to confirm your details and provide proof of identity.

If you are not sure whether you already hold an NT White Card, check before applying again.

Are White Cards Recognised Across Australia?

White Cards are generally recognised across Australia. However, your training still needs to have been completed correctly under the rules of the state or territory where it was issued.

This matters because White Card delivery rules are not the same everywhere. In the NT, online training is not recognised.

If you are moving from Alice Springs to another state for work, or coming into the NT from interstate, it is worth checking the requirements before starting on-site.

Common Mistakes to Avoid Before Booking

Booking an online White Card course

Online White Card training is not recognised in the Northern Territory. If you need a White Card for Alice Springs or NT construction work, book face-to-face training.

Assuming the course alone gives you the card

After completing the course, you may still need to apply for your NT White Card.

Missing the 60-day application window

You should usually apply within 60 days from when your training evidence is issued.

Booking the wrong state or territory course

White Card rules are state and territory specific. If you plan to work in Alice Springs or elsewhere in the NT, make sure you complete an NT-recognised course.

Arriving without the correct ID

Missing ID can delay your enrolment, training or White Card application.

Forgetting the practical requirements

This course includes practical assessment, so suitable clothing, footwear and physical participation matter.

Frequently Asked Questions: White Card Courses

1. Can I complete the White Card course online in the Northern Territory?

No. Under NT WorkSafe regulations, online training for the White Card is not recognised or accepted in the Northern Territory. To obtain your white card certification and work on sites in Alice Springs, you must complete the training face-to-face with an approved Registered Training Organisation (RTO). Be wary of websites offering "cheap online cards," as these will not allow you to legally enter NT construction sites.

2. Is my interstate White Card valid on Alice Springs worksites?

Yes. The Northern Territory operates under a mutual recognition agreement. If you hold a valid White Card issued in another Australian state or territory (such as QLD, WA, or VIC), it is generally recognised on sites across Central Australia. However, if you haven't worked in the construction industry for more than two years, you are required to retake the course to ensure your safety knowledge is current.

3. What is the process for getting the physical White Card after the course?

At Redpath, once you successfully complete the CPCWHS1001 Prepare to work safely in the construction industry course, we provide you with a Statement of Attainment. This is not your actual card. You must then submit this Statement, along with a separate application form and the required fee (approximately $30), to the Territory Business Centre in Alice Springs. Your physical (and optional digital) White Card will be issued by NT WorkSafe through them.

4. What identification do I need to bring?

On the day of your training in Alice Springs, you must provide official photo identification. Most students use a combination of a current Australian Driver’s Licence, Passport, or Birth Certificate to meet the identification requirements. Without valid ID, you cannot commence the course or be issued a certificate.

5. How long does the training take, and is there a test?

The face-to-face course typically takes 6 hours to complete. It includes a mix of theory and practical demonstrations. To pass, you must demonstrate "hands-on" competency, such as correctly fitting four types of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): a hard hat, high-visibility vest, eye protection, and hearing protection. There is also a written assessment conducted in English.

6. Do I need a USI to enrol in the White Card course?

Yes. Every student undertaking nationally recognised training in Australia must have a Unique Student Identifier (USI). This is a free government reference number that tracks your training history. You should create or find your USI at the official government website before arriving for your session at our Alice Springs facility.

7. Do I need to bring my own PPE to the course?

While we provide the specialised PPE (hard hats, etc.) required for the practical assessment, you should wear modest, practical clothing and closed-toe safety footwear to the session. For hygiene purposes, if you already own a high-visibility vest or hearing protection, you are encouraged to bring them along for your own use.
