If you have never worked in the construction industry before or you have lost your White Card; then this is the course for you. This course will help introduce you to or serve as a reminder of the current health and safety legislative requirements, personal awareness, and the basic principles of risk management for working in the construction industry in order to work safely and prevent injury or harm to self and others.
It covers identifying and orally reporting common construction hazards, understanding basic risk control measures, and identifying procedures for responding to potential incidents and emergencies. It also covers correctly selecting and fitting common personal protective equipment (PPE) used for construction work.

Frequently Asked Questions: White Card Courses
1. Can I complete the White Card course online in the Northern Territory?
No. Under NT WorkSafe regulations, online training for the White Card is not recognised or accepted in the Northern Territory. To obtain your white card certification and work on sites in Alice Springs, you must complete the training face-to-face with an approved Registered Training Organisation (RTO). Be wary of websites offering "cheap online cards," as these will not allow you to legally enter NT construction sites.
2. Is my interstate White Card valid on Alice Springs worksites?
Yes. The Northern Territory operates under a mutual recognition agreement. If you hold a valid White Card issued in another Australian state or territory (such as QLD, WA, or VIC), it is generally recognised on sites across Central Australia. However, if you haven't worked in the construction industry for more than two years, you are required to retake the course to ensure your safety knowledge is current.
3. What is the process for getting the physical White Card after the course?
At Redpath, once you successfully complete the CPCWHS1001 Prepare to work safely in the construction industry course, we provide you with a Statement of Attainment. This is not your actual card. You must then submit this Statement, along with a separate application form and the required fee (approximately $30), to the Territory Business Centre in Alice Springs. Your physical (and optional digital) White Card will be issued by NT WorkSafe through them.
4. What identification do I need to bring?
On the day of your training in Alice Springs, you must provide official photo identification. Most students use a combination of a current Australian Driver’s Licence, Passport, or Birth Certificate to meet the identification requirements. Without valid ID, you cannot commence the course or be issued a certificate.
5. How long does the training take, and is there a test?
The face-to-face course typically takes 6 hours to complete. It includes a mix of theory and practical demonstrations. To pass, you must demonstrate "hands-on" competency, such as correctly fitting four types of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): a hard hat, high-visibility vest, eye protection, and hearing protection. There is also a written assessment conducted in English.
6. Do I need a USI to enrol in the White Card course?
Yes. Every student undertaking nationally recognised training in Australia must have a Unique Student Identifier (USI). This is a free government reference number that tracks your training history. You should create or find your USI at the official government website before arriving for your session at our Alice Springs facility.
7. Do I need to bring my own PPE to the course?
While we provide the specialised PPE (hard hats, etc.) required for the practical assessment, you should wear modest, practical clothing and closed-toe safety footwear to the session. For hygiene purposes, if you already own a high-visibility vest or hearing protection, you are encouraged to bring them along for your own use.
